Primary Purpose of Position:
SMEC is currently seeking a Senior Electrical Plant Engineer to join its Nairobi Team within its Africa Division. The Senior Electrical Plant Engineer will be part of a large team and will be responsible for investigation, analysis, design and engineering of electrical controls and communication systems and equipment for hydroelectric power stations – from pre-feasibility level phase through construction closeout. You will carry out feasibility level and detailed design and all associated works as well as documentation required for project design and study (tender documents and reports).
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and evaluate electrical systems and provide recommendations with associated costs estimates for the power stations. The following electrical systems, equipment and assemblies and associated switchyards will be involved:
o Generators, exciters and voltage regulators
o Transformers and associated equipment
o Motors and motor control starters and controls
o Lightning protection and grounding systems
o Cranes and hoists electrical power systems and controls
o Cathodic protection systems
o Conduit and wiring sizing and routing
o Switchgear and controls
o Relays, PLC systems, safety shutdown systems and instrumentation
o HVAC systems
o Auxiliary supplies including battery and charger system, powerhouse and yard lighting
o Security systems
o Emergency power systems, - Prepare technical specifications and electrical drawings for contract documents,
- Prepare engineering reports,
- Oversee testing, commissioning, and start-up of completed projects,
- Produce detailed specifications for major equipment and produce engineering documents, construction specification and construction procedures,
- Prepare tender documentation for plant and equipment, including all technical schedules,
- Manage the tendering process including tender supervision and tender evaluation,
- Prepare any other assigned reports, studies or analysis for project.

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- A Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited university/college, with a power background preferred; a masters degree will be an added advantage,
- Minimum 7 years of practical experience and / or proven knowledge in power engineering and design, 5 years of which must include communication and control design in utility or industrial design/operating environments,
- Demonstrated proficiency in electrical system equipment and assembly design for at last 2 power stations and associated switchyards. Knowledge of design documents and drawings is necessary to complete a project,
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including IEC, IEEE and ANSI,
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment,
- Professional delivery and appearance to ensure SMEC image is maintained,
- Courteous and business orientated manner when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations,
- Ability to write effectively in English to furnish reports and to prepare business development materials including proposals,
- Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment,
- Willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge,
